BASE CAMP

ARCHITECTURE & INTERIORS | 2024

Location:
Carson Valley, Nevada

Project Type:
Residential

Size:
3,200 SF

Nestled within the rugged beauty of Carson Valley, this modern cabin serves as a serene refuge and home base, perfectly attuned to its natural surroundings. The design draws inspiration from the site’s unique character, creating a harmonious connection between architecture and the landscape. Elevated above the flood-prone terrain, the structure appears to float, emphasizing its light touch on the land while offering sweeping views of Carson Valley and Jobs Peak.

The cabin is fully off-grid, powered by solar panels, with a well for water and a septic system, embodying a commitment to sustainability and self-sufficiency. The architecture is characterized by two distinct wings, divided by a towering, ancient pine tree that stands as a sentinel between the public and private spaces. The public wing opens up towards expansive vistas, featuring an observatory bridge that allows for unobstructed views of the valley. The private wing, in contrast, offers a more intimate experience, with spaces oriented towards the majestic peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

This project represents a delicate balance of solitude and connection, a place where one can retreat into nature without sacrificing the comforts of modern living. The design celebrates the intersection of rugged wilderness & refined architecture, creating a timeless retreat that honors both the land and the human spirit.

This project has been designed and completed during Shahab’s time at WGA.

The residence is strategically elevated above the natural grade to address the challenges of being located within a Zone AO flood area. This design decision not only ensures safety from potential flooding but also allows the structure to rest lightly on the landscape, minimizing the need for extensive grading. By maximizing the natural drop in elevation, the home harmoniously integrates with its rugged surroundings. This approach not only respects the site’s natural topography but also enhances sustainability by reducing the environmental impact and preserving the integrity of the landscape.

Designed with light and openness in mind, this primary bathroom harmonizes warm wood textures with framed outdoor views, creating a space for calm and relaxation
